Glossary / Landlord reference

What is a landlord reference?

A landlord reference is a statement from your current or previous landlord (or letting agent) confirming things like whether you paid rent on time and looked after the property. It's a standard part of referencing for a new tenancy.

If you don't have a previous landlord - for example, this is your first time renting - this isn't unusual. A guarantor, employer reference, or personal character reference can often substitute.

If you're on bad terms with a previous landlord, address this honestly with a new landlord upfront rather than hoping it doesn't come up.
