Glossary / House share

What does house share mean?

A house share is a property where multiple unrelated tenants each rent a room and share common areas - kitchen, bathroom(s), and living space. It's one of the most common and affordable ways to rent in UK cities, particularly London.

Common variations:

  • Whole-house shares - you and your flatmates rent the entire property jointly, often on a single tenancy agreement
  • Room-only listings - a landlord rents out individual rooms separately, sometimes as an HMO
  • Mixed vs. single-gender shares - some properties are open to anyone, others (like those listed on Delphi) are specifically women-only

Understanding which type of share you're looking at affects your legal status, so check exactly how a listing is structured before you commit.
