Glossary / Credit check for renting

What does a credit check for renting involve?

As part of tenant referencing, landlords or agents often run a credit check assessing your credit history, any County Court Judgments (CCJs), and existing debt levels - generally a softer check than one used for a mortgage.

A weak or thin credit history doesn't automatically disqualify you - especially common if you're young, new to the UK, or have simply never needed credit before. Landlords often accept a guarantor or higher deposit as an alternative rather than an outright red flag.

If you know your credit history might be an issue, be upfront with a prospective landlord early and offer a guarantor proactively.
